The 1850 map showed the house still standing at the end of modern Bucktail Road (left, above), indentifying the owner as "M. Riggals" [sic]. R. and J. Riggles later lived on Cold Brook Road, as shown on the 1860 map (upper left) while S. Norton occupied this Bucktail Road house at that time. O. Lieber later occupied the place in 1872, according to another map of that date. He previously had lived in one of the vanished houses on the lost link of this road, as shown on the 1860 map (center, above). Back in 1850 "O. Leber" [sic] had lived in another of the vanished houses on that lost segment of road. Apparently these early residents moved often, trading houses like horses.
The lost portion of the road extended from the end of modern Bucktail Road, seen in the central illustration above. The road's course is still marked by the row of tall trees that appear in the center of the photo. The route crossed the Bucktail stream just beyond this point, continuing on its northwest bank for a short distance before recrossing the stream to return to the southeast bank. Apparently the reason for this detour was connection to another lost road which descended into the Bucktail ravine.
Near this intersection, where the road recrossed the stream, was a cabin, probably built by O. Lieber as the first of his three homes in this neighborhood. An old house survived there until recently. Apparently the building was destroyed by fire, as evidenced by the chared debris inside the stone foundation walls (right, above). The site is shown on the modern map (the westernmost red dot on the plan at right, above).

A double row of hedgerows clearly shows the path of the old road extending east from the site of the Lieber cabin. This segment appears as the blue line between two red dots on the modern plan (right, above). It separates two large cultivated fields.
A faint blue line on the aerial photo below indicates the route of the lost Bucktail-Craig road, as well as the lost road descending into the Bucktail gulley.

Cold Brook Road cuts diagonally across the lower left corner of the picture. Bucktail Road meets Cold Brook Road at the left edge of the photo.
